Does Claude Have an ADHD Mode? The Honest Answer

No, Claude has no ADHD Executive Function Mode. Here's what Anthropic actually documents, verified, and the paste-once setup that does the real job.

No — there is no “ADHD Executive Function Mode” in Claude, and Anthropic has never shipped a feature by that name. If a video told you otherwise, it’s describing a workflow people built themselves, dressed up as a hidden setting. The real story is more useful than the myth: Claude does have tools that do a version of this job — personalization, Projects, memory — and this post walks through exactly what they are, verified against Anthropic’s own help pages, plus the paste-once setup that gets you there. For the rest of the AI-for-ADHD system this fits inside, see the AI for ADHD hub.

Where the claim came from

A viral Instagram clip in 2026 claimed Claude has a feature called “ADHD Executive Function Mode” that you can activate to “hack your brain’s dopamine.” It spread hard — hundreds of thousands of likes, reposts on X, Threads, and LinkedIn, all repeating the same claim with slightly different framing. None of them link to an Anthropic page, a changelog entry, or a settings screen, because there isn’t one to link to.

The developer and writer Chudi Nnorukam ran the claim down and published the debunk: “No. Claude Code has no feature, setting, or command by that name, and Anthropic has never shipped one.” What people online were actually describing, per that piece, is a pattern users build themselves — a persistent log of decisions and context, kept in a file Claude reads every session, functioning as external working memory. That’s a real and useful technique. It just isn’t a button Anthropic installed for you.

What Anthropic actually documents

I checked both of Anthropic’s official documentation sites directly. Support.claude.com’s page on Claude’s personalization features describes exactly three tools — account-wide instructions, project-specific instructions, and skills — and makes no mention of ADHD, executive function, or any diagnosis-specific mode anywhere on the page. Docs.claude.com, which covers the developer and Claude Code side, doesn’t mention it either. If Anthropic had shipped something like this, it would be documented in one of those two places, the way every other feature is. It isn’t, in either.

What actually does the job

The honest answer isn’t “nothing exists” — it’s that the job gets done by general-purpose tools, configured once, instead of a mode with your condition’s name on it.

Personal preferences. In Settings, there’s a field for “Instructions for Claude” that applies to every conversation, account-wide. This is where you describe how your brain works and how you want answers shaped — short, one action at a time, no pep talks — once, instead of re-explaining it every session. The Claude setup guide has the exact paste-once block.

Projects with a standing brief. A Project is a workspace with its own instructions and files, and — worth knowing if you assumed otherwise — it’s available on the free plan, not gated to paid accounts. Set one up for a recurring job (“Morning Sort,” “Weekly Reset”) with instructions written once, and every future conversation inside it already knows the rules. That’s the closest thing to a “mode,” and it’s a feature you build, not one you toggle.

Memory, where available. Claude can save what it learns about you across chats and carry it into new conversations, on by default for free, Pro, and Max plans on web, desktop, and mobile (Team and Enterprise plans have it off by default, turned on by an admin). Combined with a personalization block, this is most of what the viral claim was gesturing at — Claude actually remembering your situation instead of starting cold — except it’s a documented setting, not a secret one.

A GitHub skill, honestly described. Searching for an ADHD-related skill on GitHub turns up a real, working project — a Claude Code skill literally named “adhd.” Worth being straight about what it is, though: it’s not a personal-productivity tool for people with ADHD. It’s a reasoning technique for coding agents — the README describes it as “tree-of-thought with pruning,” built to fan out multiple independent lines of reasoning under different framings for hard design or debugging problems, then prune the weak ones. The name is a metaphor for divergent thinking, not a tool for divergent attention. If you’re a developer using Claude Code and the name caught your eye expecting task-management help, this isn’t that — it’s a genuinely useful thing for a different problem.

The paste-once setup

None of the above matters if you have to remember to use it every time, which is exactly the kind of tool ADHD brains abandon by week two. The move is to install it once: the Claude for ADHD setup guide has the personalization block ready to paste, plus how to turn a Project into a standing ritual so “Morning Sort” or “Weekly Reset” is a room you walk into instead of a prompt you have to recall. Ten minutes, free tier included, and it holds without you thinking about it again.

The honest bottom line

I get why the myth spread — “there’s a secret setting for your exact brain” is a better story than “you configure a general tool once.” But the configured version is the one that’s actually documented, actually free, and actually still there next week. No mode required.

If you want the whole thing installed instead of assembled piece by piece, the ADHD AI Starter Kit ships the paste-once instructions for both ChatGPT and Claude, five rituals written as ready-to-run Project instructions, and printable anchor cards — $27 once, no subscription, works entirely on free AI accounts.

FAQ

Does Claude have an ADHD Executive Function Mode? No — Anthropic has never shipped a feature by that name, and it appears nowhere on support.claude.com or docs.claude.com; the claim traces to a viral 2026 Instagram video, not an official release.

Where did the “ADHD Executive Function Mode” claim come from? It started with an Instagram clip in 2026 that claimed Claude has a hidden feature for hacking focus and dopamine, and it spread across other platforms before anyone traced it back to nothing — no changelog, no settings page, no official mention.

What should I use instead of a mode that doesn’t exist? Claude’s personalization settings (an account-wide instructions field), Projects (available free, for standing rituals with their own instructions), and memory (on by default for most plans) together do the job the myth described, verified against Anthropic’s own help pages.

Is there a real “adhd” skill for Claude Code? Yes, there’s a GitHub project literally named “adhd,” but it’s a divergent-reasoning technique for coding and design problems, not a personal task-management tool for people with ADHD — worth knowing before you install it expecting the wrong thing.

Do I need a paid Claude plan for personalization or Projects? No — both the account-wide instructions field and Projects are available on Claude’s free plan; paid plans add capacity and features elsewhere, not access to these two.
